Sustainable Development Department, Global Studies to Host Presentation by Acclaimed Food Justice Author
Date: 11/26 - 11/26   click here for website

Appalachian State University's Sustainable Development Department and Global Studies Program are co-hosting a presentation by acclaimed author and psychologist Dr. Melanie Joy at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, in Room 114 of the Belk Library. Joy's presentation is based on her award-winning book "Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism."

Joy will explain carnism, the invisible belief system that shapes our perceptions of the meat we eat, so that we love some animals and eat others without knowing why.

Joy is a longtime advocate of social and environmental justice and animal protection. At the University of Massachusetts, Boston, she teaches courses which examine racism, heterosexism, genderism, domestic violence and psychological trauma.

"Pulling back the curtain on carnism can help us all become more empowered citizens and more active social witnesses, whatever our dietary choices may be," Joy said.

This event is free and open to the public. Parental/guardian discretion is advised for younger attendees.

Blue Ridge Conservancy Presents "Old-Fashioned Farm Christmas", Hosts Choose & Cut
Date: 12/1 - 12/01   click here for website

Blue Ridge Conservancy (BRC) will host its first annual Christmas Tree Choose & Cut, Saturday, Dec. 1, on the Old Orchard Creek Farm located at 410 Swansie Shepard Road in Lansing.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., anyone is welcome to take part in the High Country's time-honored tradition of Christmas tree cutting. Trees start at $40, and cash, checks and credit cards are accepted.

Cider, hot chocolate and other holiday treats will also be provided in the blueberry shed on the farm. Bring your family and come celebrate the holidays with BRC.

"Everyone is invited to come out to the beautiful Ashe County countryside and cut a Christmas tree to help support Blue Ridge Conservancy's mission to protect our North Carolina resources", said Walter Clark, Executive Director of BRC.

All proceeds will benefit BRC and its mission to permanently protect land and water resources with agricultural, ecological, cultural, recreational and scenic value in northwest North Carolina.

Blue Ridge Conservancy is a private, non-profit, non-governmental organization incorporated in North Carolina. Since our founding, we have protected over 16,000 acres in Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey Counties. In addition to protecting working farmland, BRC's efforts have resulted in the creation of state natural areas like Beech Creek Bog, Bear Paw and Bullhead Mountain. We continue to help Elk Knob State park expand its borders and in 2008 we led the way in establishing a 2,000-acre State Game Land preserve on Pond Mountain in Ashe County.

Shop Local Saturday
Date: 12/1 - 12/01   click here for website

Just in time for holiday shopping, a Boone Area Chamber of Commerce promotion, "Shop Local Saturdays," begins this Saturday, Dec. 1.

Boone Area Chamber President Dan Meyer said the idea for the annual holiday-shopping campaign sprang from American Express' "Small Business Saturday," which takes place in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

"The biggest recipient of that is American Express - not necessarily the businesses," Meyer said. "We looked at that and said, 'We want to impact our local businesses on more than one day and always emphasize local shopping."

A mass email from the Boone Area Chamber reads, "Shop LOCAL [on] Saturdays between now and Christmas. It makes $$$$ and 'sense!' Add your 'economic stimulus' to the High Country economy. Think of the 'shipping & handling' costs of driving off the mountain. Closer IS better!"

"We want to encourage people to remember to look for gift items and products and services in the High Country and support the local economy," Meyer said, adding that local business owners are our friends and neighbors.

To keep the message in the public eye, Meyer said, signs with the "Shop Local Saturdays" logo will be placed at major corridors coming into town.
