Carolina Chowdown at ASU
Date: 11/14 - 11/14   click here for website

Carolina Chowdown: A Local Food Feast series is back for the 2012-2013 school year. Last year, the series consisted of six meals featuring locally sourced meats and grains as well as seasonal produce.

Beginning with a cookout in September 2011 and concluding with a Mediterranean-themed meal in April, ASU has worked with our local partners to bring local food to campus.

Back by popular demand, ASU is continuing the series during the 2012-2013 academic year.

A Local Thanksgiving is the theme for November's Carolina Chowdown on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 - 11:00am - 2:00pm

Friday, November 16, 2012 - 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Appetizers, Songs, and Discussion about Food Justice, Globalization, and the connections between Appalachian and Kenya.

Guest Chef Kabui from Kenya will be preparing delicious soup and specialty appetizers using local produce from the High Country coupled with his culinary skills developed in his home country of Kenya.

Local musicians will be singing original and cover songs related to food, farming, and food justice.

Participants will have the opportunity to find out about Chef Kabui's inspiring story, his many projects around the world, and his philosophy of changing the lives of the people around him and the society at large in the way they view food, its usage and sustainability.

Chef Kabui is a celebrated organic chef, urban farmer, and food activist from Durham. He was born in central Kenya to a coffee farmer Mum and restaurant owner Dad. He brings to the table a combination of history, education and experience that has resulted in a unique perspective on food and healthy eating in America and beyond. He's worked with celebrities such as Will Allen, been interviewed on NPR multiple times, and has prepared meals for Burts Bees headquarters, the Kenyan Embassy, and many more.

Donations are accepted and encouraged. All proceeds will benefit Kabui's Kenyan Eco-Institute and F.A.R.M. Cafe.
